Unseen Phuket: Geting Around Phuket

Tuk Tuks are the small red open taxis which you can find everywhere on the island. They are great to get around. You have to negotiate the fare before you hop in. Rates depend on distance, time, weather and many other things and starts at app. 50 Baht for a short distance and can go up to 500 Baht for a longer trip. It is normally cheaper to stop a Tuk Tuk when it passes by then to take one which is waiting in front of a hotel or restaurant.
There are metered taxis everywhere. Only use them when they go by the meter if they ask for a fixed price don't go for it and take another one.
Songthaews are the open blue-yellow local buses. They follow fixed routes and operate between 6am and 7 pm. There are no bus-stops so you just stop the songthaews when they pass by and give the driver a sign when you want to leave the bus. Prices are fixed and much cheaper then Tuk Tuks but it takes a bit longer to reach your destination. They operate mostly from Phuket Town to the different beaches but not between the beaches.
TaxiThey are just everywhere. You can recognize them by there green or red wests with numbers on them. This transport is for the more adventures ones as it is not the safest but it is fast, cheap and bring you wherever you want. As with the Tuk Tuks the price must be negotiated before the ride.

Unseen Phuket Festivals Events

Tourist Season Opening Festival
is usually called the Patong Carnival in English according to from the place where celebrations occur, and is held on November 1. There are many stalls with merchandise and food, parades, sports event, and a beauty competition for foreign tourists. The fest is held to cement solidarity among the government, the private business sector, and the people.

Chao Le Boat Floating Festival( Sea Gypsy )
falls during the middle of the sixth and eleventh lunar months yearly. The fest is held at the Chao Le or Sea Gipsy, villages in Phuket. The Rawai and Sapam villages hold their ceremonies on the 13th; Sire village celebrates on the 14th; and the village at Laem La (east of the bridge on Phuket's northern tip) celebrates on the 15th. Ceremonies, which center around the setting adrift of small boats similar to the Thai Festival of Loy Krathong, are held at night and their purpose is to drive away evil and to bring good luck. Fingernail clipping and strands of hair are put in the little boats before being released, along with little dolls fashioned from wood. Afterwards, the villagers perform their famous dance round their own boats, called the Ram Rong Ngeng.

Phuket King's Cup Regatta
was first held in 1987 in honor of His Majesty's 60th birthday. The King of Thailand is a noted boating enthusiast and yachts come from around the world to participate in the competition, which is the largest and most popular in Southeast Asia. Unseen Phuket Thailand

Amphoe Muang Phuket
Chalong TempleIs about 8 kms. outside town. Take Vichit Songkram Rd., to the Bypass Rd., and turn left, and drive for about 10 mins. Wat Chalong will be on your left. This is where stands the cast statue of Luang Por Cham, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee, or Chinese Coolie, Rebellion in 1876 during the reign of Rama V. There are also statues of Luang Por Chaung, and Luang Por Gluam. Other monks, who were abbots of the temple during later times, and who are the objects of respect and recipients of the offerings by Phuket people generally.

Phuket Aquarium
More than one hundred species of sea life are on display at the aquarium, many of them taken from the water around Phuket. The aquarium is located at Cape Panwa, on the island's extreme southeast; admission is 5 Baht for children and 20 Baht for adults. A Songtaew (local bus) can be taken from the Talad Sot, or Fresh Market. Tel. (076) 391126. Open daily, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Khao Rang
A great view of Phuket Town, the southern part of the island, and some of the offshore islands, can be obtained by going to the top of Khao Rang Hill, on the city's northwest. There are also several restaurants featuring spectacular views of the city, a health park for exercise enthusiasts, and a comfortable, expanse of grass for picnickers at the top with a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsada Nupradit the model Governor of Phuket during King Rama V's reign.

Antique Buildings
The beginning of the tin boom during the Nineteenth Century led to construction of many fine old mansions and shops still well preserved. The architectural style, typical of the region, is described as Sino-Portuguese and has a strongly Mediterranean character. Shops present a very narrow face on the street but stretch back a long way. Many, especially on Dibuk Rd., have old wooden doors with Chinese fretwork carving. Other streets, forming what might be called "Old Phuket", with similar structures are Phang-nga, Yaowarat, Thalang, and Krabi, and a walking tour of the area is easy and delightful. Some other old European-style buildings of note are the Provincial Hall (Sala Klang), the Phuket Courthouse (San Changwat), and Nakhon Luang Thai Bank.

Unseen Phuket:Shoping

Unseen Phuket: Shoping in Patong Beach

Start early evening and shop til you drop! Beachwear, sportswear, souvenirs can be bought from street stalls, little shops and noisy night markets. Patong also has specialist jewellry, ethnic crafts, art and antiques shops, waiting for the dedicated bargain hunter.
On the streets you'll find brightly-lit stalls as far as the eye can see. The night market - located along the main Beach road, offers handicrafts, silk scarves, sarongs, beach and leisure wear, leather goods and luggage, CD's, computer games, electronic gadgets and toys. Open every night.

It's always a good idea to check around with other vendors and stores to make sure of the price range for whatever you are buying. The Tourist Authority of Thailand warns against following up shopping recommendations from touting taxi drivers and tour guides who receive commissions for bringing tourists to places to shop. Often the experience is a waste of your valuable shopping time.

For the best results - bargain with a smile and good humour!

Be aware that it is forbidden to take images of Buddha, deities, and some antique artifacts from the country without first obtaining approval from the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok.
If your antique artifact or Buddha image is sold with a certificate of authenticity, you will need to apply for permission to export. Your average artifact however is more than likely to be a replica - the like of which you see available in street stalls and shops all over the country, and which you can take out of the country.

Unseen Phuket Foods

Phuket has a number of foods different in character and flavour from those of other areas in Thailand. The international character of the island, however, with so many different restaurants catering to a multitude of tastes, makes it difficult for non-Thais to identify Phuket cuisine. Below is a list of dishes and shops where they can be sampled.
Mee Hokkian is yellow egg noodles stir-fried with leafy green vegetables in soy sauce, usually with pork or chicken. The best known shops are :

- Mee Ton Poh :near the clock tower traffic circle on Phuket Rd., in Phuket Town.
- Mee Sapam : On Thep Krasatri Rd., in the village of Sapam.
- Mee Ao Geh : on Phunphol Rd., in Phuket Town. Yellow noodles are also cooked in both "dry" and "wet" versions, and as a prawn soup. For these try

Kanohm Jin Phuket : Noodles often compared to spaghetti usually served with a spicy curry sauce, the most common made from fish. It is usually eaten as a breakfast food and is, if you can stand its fresh character, delicious. It comes with an array of fresh vegetables and boiled eggs that are mixed with the dish by dinners at their table. It is often found with the fried pastry called Pah Tong Go and the curried fish mousse called Hor Mohk, both of which are very tasty. Some of the curries are not spicy, so try a shop that has many curries to choose from if you are sensitive to spicy cuisine. There are many shops to choose from everywhere in Phuket but the most famous are in Phuket Town :
- Kwan Kanohm Jin on Tungka Rd.
- Pah Mai on statun Rd.
- Pha Ri on Pahtiphaht Rd.

Mee Sue Breakfast noodles served with the boiled rice dishes Khao Tohm or Johk. This can be ordered at various shops around town, but the best known in Phuket Town is :
- Kou Kwan near Ruampaet Hospital on Phuket Rd.

Oh Tao Oysters fried with flour, eggs, and taro root. The best known places in Phuket Town are :

Other foods held to be characteristic of Phuket include cashew nuts, which are planted along many of Phuket's highways, and pineapples--though to be crisper and sweeter than elsewhere.

Everywhere you go their smiles will light up your day. It's not
without reason Thailand is The Land Of Smiles. Another reason
to visit Phuket is for the beaches and warm water where the tropical
sun give you a tan all year round.

Flying down to Phuket from Bangkok take just over one hour and
shortly before landing will you see many small green limestone
islands rising up from the sea underneath you, a beautiful sight
so different from Bangkok's concrete jungle. What you are seeing
is Phang-Nga Bay where you later will go on a boat tour between
more than one hundred spectacular limestone rock formations.
Then Phuket reveal itself, the pearl of the Andaman Sea with lush
green hills as far you can see. You have now arrived in paradise.

Next a luxurious hotel are waiting at one of the many white sandy

Since the sun in Phuket is very strong, every beach have chair
with umbrella for rent. But it don't stop tourists from getting burned,
as the many red body's are a living proof of. It's easy to be fooled
by the sea breeze or cloudy weather into thinking I will not be burned.
Be careful, then you will have a fantastic holiday and like many people
be back the next year.
Put on some sunscreen and hit the beach and relax, maybe with a cold beer
bought from your friendly beach vendor that will be more then happy to
bring a new one without the need to get up, just wave.
There is more than enough time after sunset to shop and eat,
shops don't close before midnight and you should be happy to know
that water temperature hold between 27-29 degrees, if you should
feel the urge to swim.
When the sun has gone down it's time to try out the world famous
chili hot Thai food and as being on an island seafood is abundant from
small and cheap street stalls to expensive restaurants with live music.
Be careful with the chili or else your throat will burn like it never have before.

Things To Do in Phuket

Islands Boat Tours Phuket
Phuket Island itself has beautiful beaches and a huge range of activities and entertainment, however, what really makes Phuket a special holiday destination is the fact that it is the gateway to the islands in the Andaman Sea and Phang Nga Bay. Many of the idyllic picture-postcard scenes are taken on these small islands. Most of these are uninhabited and you have to take a tour or charter a boat to get there.
For the best experience, take an overnight cruise which allows you to enjoy the most enchanting parts of the day; early morning and sunset. Charter boats are available with captain, crew, and meals including fresh local seafood.
*************************************************************
Canoeing and Canoe Trips Phuket
Sea canoe trips are available as one-day tours or more extended tours involving overnight camping. The majority of the trips take place in neighbouring Phang Nga Bay and Krabi, where mangrove swamps, cliff-lined lagoons and sea caves can only be accessed by sea canoe.
Sea canoeing is one of the best ways to explore what is one of the world's most beautiful and dramatic landscapes. Phang Nga Bay is famous for its fascinating and beautiful limestone karst islands and caves. It's no accident that two James Bond films have been filmed here.
The experience of being paddled through dark but glittering caves and emergine into the cliff-lined lagoons, known as hongs, is an experience not to be missed during your time in Phuket.

Phuket History

Phuket History

Phuket has a long recorded history, and according to most begins around A.D. 1025 when it was used as a stopover point by ships sailing between China and India. In those days, the island was one of the twelve governed by the Shivite Empire.
In the 16th century, Phuket was associated with Takua Pah. During this time, the northern and central regions of the island were controlled by the Thais, while the rest was turned over to the tin trade. Late in the century, the Dutch established a trading post on the island.
During the second half of the 18th century, Phuket was for a short while overtaken by the Burmese. King Taksin of Thailand eventually drove them out and regained control of the island. After retaking control, there were numerous efforts made by the Burmese to invade and occupy the land’s southern provinces. All of these attempts were successfully defended by the Thais.
During the 19th century, in the height of the tin trade on the island, Chinese people came in great numbers and became the dominant ethnic makeup of the central region.
In 1932 Phuket became a separate province of Thailand , and has remained such until present day.

Know before you go Phuket

Phuket Culture

Phuket(Thailand) culture is one of the most colorful and interesting in the world, and has in large part been shaped by the countries dominant religion. Around 95% of Thailand’s population is Buddhist, and evidence of this can be seen absolutely everywhere.
There are many signs of Buddhism threaded into every day life in Phuket, and temples are the most obvious. Wat Chalong (the largest temple on the island) is a great place to witness first hand the uniqueness and beauty of this eastern religion. Orange robed monks are frequently seen walking the streets, and statues of the Buddha can be found absolutely everywhere.
An interesting characteristic of Thailand , when compared to many other southeastern countries, is the fact that women are actively involved in business affairs and the arts.
Thai is the country’s official language, with Lao, Chinese, Malay, and Mon-Khmer also spoken. English is taught in secondary schools and is also used in government and commerce. In most tourist areas, communicating in English is not a problem.
Known as the land of 1000 smiles, the Thai people are some of the friendliest in the world. At times, a simple smile is all it takes to break down a language barrier.
Thais are very respectful of the King and as a tourist you should be aware the any offences against the King could be punishable. Also everyone is expected to stand when the national anthem is played.

Songkran: 13th - 15thBeginning on the 13th of April Thai people all over the country celebrate the Thai New Year, the most important holiday on the Thai calendar. The holiday is best known for revellers playfully splashing water on each other and dabing scented powder on each others faces as a new year blessing. Over the years this has escalated into a huge water fight where anyone is fair game. People roam the streets armed with high pressure water pistols or stand by the side of the road with buckets and hoses, ready to drench any passer-by. If you venture out during this period, the 13th in particular, expect to get soaked!Traditionally, however, Songkran is a time of cleaning and renewal. During Songkran Thais perform religious rituals such as cleaning Buddha images, giving alms to the monks and going to the temple to pray. Songkran is also a time for families. October 2008
Phuket Vegetarian Festival The Vegetarian Festival takes place at the start of the ninth Chinese lunar month, which falls in late September or early October. This is Phuket's most famous and spectacular festival. The rituals, which last for nine days, are performed to purify both body and mind. During this time, participants go on a strict diet, which is technically vegan as no animal products are allowed to be consumed.
There are processions through the streets and tests of devotion where supplicants perform acts of self-mortification including piercing of the cheeks and tongues with knives and various objects. The more impressive events include ascetic devotees walking on burning coals and climbing ladders with knife-edged rungs. Definitely not for the faint hearted. November 2008
Phuket (Patong) Carnival The carnival is held in the first week of November to celebrate the start of the high season at Patong Beach. There are stalls selling crafts and food, colourful parades, watersports competitions, fashion shows and a beauty pageant. This years festival marks the 20th anniversary of the event and promises to be the biggest ever.
Loi KrathongLoi Krathong takes place on the night of the full moon in November and is the most magical of all Thai festivals. Small lotus-shaped boats woven from banana leaves, called krathongs, are floated on water. These vessels contain small flowers, candles, incense and offerings to thank Mother Water for providing water for them to use. Thai people also believe that if they place a strand of hair or nail clipping in the krathong their troubles will be carried away with it.
In Phuket, many people go to Saphan Hin on the edge of Phuket City to launch their krathongs. The beach at Patong is also popular. There you can also float paper lanterns into the sky. Watching hundreds of these glowing lanterns drifting up into the sky over the sea is an enchanting way to spend an evening.

Thailand's only island province, Phuket is a world famous tourist destination, renowed for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, lots of offshore islands providing great sites for diving, as well as plentiful high quality resort accommodation.
Formerly its great wealth came from tin mining, and the influence of the Chinese tin and rubber entrepreneurs is evident ,especially in the town, where numerous Chinese temples and shrines celebrate a Vegetarian Food Festival every October.
Today the province's wealth comes from the vast tourism industry that has developed in recent years, as travellers around the world discover Phuket hasa lot to offer in the way of sun and sea. Phuket Beaches
Phuket
is a world famous tourist destination and the reason for that is quite simple-it’sfantastic beaches. Warm, crystal blue waters, soft white sand and a perfect tropical climate combine to make Phuket beaches among the best in the world. The inviting waters of the tranquil Andaman Sea are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, divingand other water sports. The island has plenty of beaches to choose from, notsurprisingly the best ones are well developed and usually busy, though not packed. However it’s just as easy to rent a bike and go looking for a small secluded beachtucked away somewhere on the island. Most of the swimmable beaches are found on the west facing side of Phuket island.

Beaches on Phuket are well set up to cater to visitors with sun lounges andumbrellas for rent and vendors strolling the beach selling fruit, snacks and ice cream. Most Phuket beaches have a number of restaurants and stalls offering food and drinks either on the beach itself or within a hundred metres. Beachfront massage stands are also common with shaded platforms where talented masseuses arehappy to work out those niggling aches and pains while you are hypnotized bythe picture perfect scenery. Sometimes you needn’t even go looking for them, they wander by offering their services.

Patong Beach

The heart of Phuket’s tourism industry, Patong offers luxury accommodation, excellent shopping and vibrant nightlife. Restaurants, bars and shopping centres are all located within a five minute walk of this, the island’s most popular beach.

Kamala Beach
Just north of Patong, around a well developed headland is Kamala, a nice quiet escape from the frenetic pace of its busy neighbour. This relatively small beach is fairly developed but sees little of the ‘day traffic’ that Patong experiences, yet is a merely a 10 minute ride from the main action further south.

Surin Beach
Easily accessible from Kamala, and once the playground of King Rama VII, this beach remains nicely underdeveloped which is why some of the island’s most exclusive resorts are now found here. But the beach has a fun and relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by locals and foreigners alike and boasts a backdrop of lush gardens of wealthy villa estates.

Bang Tao Beach
Another of a series of long sweeping beach bays stretching northwards along the west coast, Bang Tao is a 8km stretch of lovely white beach, most notable for a series of inland lagoons which have been converted into lagunas and marinas hosting some upmarket developments. This means there are some very posh resorts here, but the beach is relaxed and offers plenty of choices for all tastes.

Karon Beach
Located just south of Patong, but world’s away in terms of atmosphere, Karon is far less frenetic and isn’t quite the night-spot magnet that Patong is with its sleazy corners. The area hosts more upmarket resorts but much of this long sweeping beach is lined with a public road making it more accessible for passer-bys.

Kata Beach
Adjacent to Karon and popular with families, this beach is quieter and smaller than Patong, but still offers many of the same amenities, including excellent beachfront resorts, fine restaurants and great shopping. The beach itself is a long, narrow stretch of beautiful white sand lined with shady palm trees.

Nai Harn Beach
This quiet bay is popular with locals and is much quieter and less crowded than other beaches of its size. There are still plenty of people during the high season and a small number of shops and restaurants exist near the shoreline. During the high season the water is extremely calm and Nai Harn is a popular anchorage for yachts at this time of year.

Rawai Beach
The sleepy southern tip of the island was once a bustling fishing village and nowadays is favoured by local ex-pats. It’s not the best swimming beach on the island but boasts a quiet and picturesque atmosphere with good seafood restaurants.

Nai Yang Beach
Isolated at the Northern end of the west coast, Nai Yang Beach is conveniently close to the airport but miles from anywhere else. It’s a modest escape from the rest of the island and ideal for the budget conscious – where you can get a bungalow 50m from the beach for less than 1000 baht a night. It’s an unpretentious option

Phuket General Information

Phuket is Thailand ’s largest island, approximately the size of Singapore. Phuket nestles in balmy Andaman Sea waters on Thailand’s Indian Ocean coastline 862 kilometres south of Bangkok.

Phuket
formerly derives its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoyed a rich and colourful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign trader’s ship logs.
The Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traded with Phuket. Other visitors were less friendly. Phuket’s most famous monument is the memorial statue of the heroines Thao Thepkasattri and Thao Sisunthon, who rallied islanders in 1785 to repel Burmese invaders.

Phuket is blessed with magnificent coves and bays, powdery, palm-fringed white beaches, sparkling island-dotted seas, sincerely hospitable people, superb accommodations and seafood, delightful turn-of-the-century Sino-Portuguese architecture; numerous sporting and leisure opportunities; a lush tropical landscape – all of which combine to create a delightful ambience for truly memorable holidays.
